I'd take the section that starts on 729 in my edition---the one's that's found in new bookstores these days--- that starts out with "No, Ketchup, no ketchup, " the hirsute blackjecket searching agitatedly among the cruets and salvers. . . .", the whole inedible alliteratives banquet, and stack it alongside the famous banquet scene from Satyricon, for roots, amplification and placement in a historical context.
