Perhaps Darby doesn't have the hots for Angela; the final sentence of the
section (as Mike noted earlier, I'm still playing catch-up here) is more
than a little ambiguous. On 400 he is "gazing at the underage 'songbird'";
on 401 the ambiguity of the writing indicates that it might be the
incongruity of "songstress" in juxtaposition to "spangled garment" that has
drawn his attention, rather than one to the exclusion of the other (just as
it is Darby who fastens on the precise phrasing of "d' toime machine").
