Yeah, that of course is likely at least half of it, but such details
always seem to, if not Mean  in any clearcut way, Insinuate, Imply
something in Pynchon, at any rate ...

I'm sure of that, at least, just couldn't find quickly/easily the
particular New Testament line I wanted to illustrate that, is all.
But I figured that "evangelical" in the Carolyn Marvin passage'd
indicate that well enough, so ...
