Ok - so I've identified the bird as a Eurasian Jay
(doesn't look at all like our North American variety,
but that's part of the challenge I suppose):

So (3) is Jay or "J." + ? + ? 

I'm obviously getting way too absorbed in this.  There
was no reason to spend my Sunday learning that British
steam rollers were still in use in the 60s (part of
the M1 apparently was paved using steam rollers - who
knew?):
