Just tried a Google Fight:

pynchon phantom: 42,200 results

salinger phantom: 93,400 results

("süskind phantom" yields just 16,600 results.)

It looks like "phantom" is indeed the canonical epithet for writers
preferring a reclusive lifestyle.
