One reason for the lack of engagement. Though, at the same time, certain 
aspects strike a resonance like no other.....and as Tore said, doesn't the 
moral complexity (inconsistancy, even) of P's characters make them, in a 
way, more real than most? even if we wouldn't expect, or even want, to meet 
them in the street? And though a part of us might hope for purity, that Webb 
will blow up the bridge *before* the train arrives, probably a lot fewer of 
us would be reading (and re-reading) P's books if he did.

Which makes the more realistic (Chandler/Hammett) style of the Basnight 
section towards the end that much more fun.....
