CD sales dive into toilet, end of musical civilization

You're right, but I think the article missed the point there entirely.
There's still masses of brilliant music being released every week, much
of which would never see the light of day if it wasn't for the jackasses
who saved up for a laptop and some software and learned how to play it.
Yes, there's tons of crap self-released, home-recorded stuff out there,
but no more than that being recorded in expensive studios and released
by major labels. The accessibility to record stuff at home and release
it yourself or on smaller labels, totally bypassing any dealings with a
major, is only a good thing, if you ask me. If I have to wade through 20
bad records to get one gem which never would've been made without home
recording, well I don't mind that... The article was correct in what it
said about the cd format, but that's why smaller labels (ie the good
ones!) are doing better than they have in years - because genuine music
lovers are still obsessively buying records all the time, while your
more part-time music fan just copies or downloads the latest fashionable
major-label pop act...

Sad to say, but the article's right. Our store used to have a "Local
Artists"section full of the most gawdaful "music" issues you've ever
encountered, obviously made on home P.C.'s with paper labels pasted over
the CDR labels, graphic design from the land of the blind and no sales.
Go to some indy CD/LP outlet some time, and note the general quality of
the home/studio stuff produced by local bands.

And comments like "any jackass with a home studio and a computer can
make a record" are ignorant beyond belief...
