The ur-text isn't clear enough to provide an answer. "Referring to
conservative Cornellians" is a clumsy, ambiguous transition. My guess is
that David Corn intended "Thank you for giving us [alumni as different as]
Thomas Pynchon and Ann Coulter," and Segelken (the Cornell Chronicle
reporter) was too busy tracking the political ping-pong to catch it.
