Actually, the black version of the title block is sans serif. The first
refraction (or shadow) is a serif display font, and the second refraction is
another, different, sans serif.
Unless your dust jacket is different from mine, in which case we have a
completely new set of speculations to explore. In any case I think it could
be said that the various type treatments of the title are traveling through
time, but not necessarily in any particular direction.
