Have you had this rare experience when you bump into somebody (I mean in 
offlist life!) who digs Pynchon just the way you do and that's like a 
Masonic handshake, or whatever, because this is a person you could talk for 
hours with, as the ice has been broken by Pynch?
It goes like this: Skeptically: 'Have you heard about a certain writer 
called Thomas Pynchon?' 'HAVE I heard about PYNCHON??? I've read GR three 
times, it's my bedtable book!" 'Absolutely, man, he's my favourite writer 
too!" etc. I had this conversation once, was doing some administrative 
side-job and there was a guy, an Oxford graduate, who was mightily surprised 
that I not only knew about Pynchon, but was also a hardcore fan.
