The preface is by a certain Peter Ackroyd, I think that explains a lot. He 
wouldn't have written a preface to a Pynchonless literary encyclopedia (I 
mean, Hawksmoor and M&D share some stuff, although he does realise the value 
of P's books per se). But who's Emma Beare? Sheesh.
