Notice the Christ in the Wilderness and in the grave overtones in this
last quote. The tables really have turned for Vibe now that his
"double" is no longer content in his role and sees his life worth more
Vibe's in the larger scheme of things. Mollification of Vibe in order
to contain his growing murderous raging fantasies is something Foley
will soon not be willing to do.

Grant and Lee fought the bloody battle of the Wilderness where many troops,
wounded and unable to move, were burned alive due to the many fires that
were created during the battle. The 'between the worlds' may be an allusion
to these poor souls who were caught in this way.

The Kit-Vibe relationship reminds me alot of Wyatt-Recktall Brown in The
Recognitions.

I find Foley to be a pretty enigmatic character throughout the book
