A reference to the Gold Rush of 1858-1861, cfr the pynchonwiki entry.

Could this be the 2nd (hidden) reference to the Civil War in a few 
lines?  The Civil War in this section seems to be playing a role in the 
background and is directly connected to the story of Foley Walker.
