I wonder does this passage make anybody else sad for missed 
opportunities?  Times that one has chosen the path more traveled 
by, followed the dollar instead of the heart, placed one's dreams
in the hands of the establishment instead of in those of
the outcaste...

Relevant to AtD's plots, of course, is 

a) removal of Kit from Tesla's team as another phase 
of interfering with Tesla

b) the deletion of Kit from anything like home - though he's 
traveled around enough while working, there's been no leavetaking 
until he gets on the train to Yale.  He's also betraying his class, 
in Webb's terms
