I think it is safe to say that there is a general consensus that GR is the 
cream of the crop, even though there are plenty of people on and off this 
list who'll root for e.g. M&D and Lot 49. For my money, however, GR is head 
and shoulders above Pynchon's other novels (which are head and shoulders 
above most other novels). In his review of GR in The New York Times, 
Christopher Lehmann-Haupt famously wrote: "If I were banished to the moon 
tomorrow and could take only five books along, this would have to be one of 
them." Well, if I were banished to the moon tomorrow and could take only 
five books along, I'd bring five copies of GR. That way, I could 
accidentally flush out a copy in the high-tech toilet, lend another copy to 
any Chinese astronaut I might encounter, wear out two copies, and still keep 
on readin'.
