The Disgusting English Candy Drill

i understand the idea that Tyrone is suffering for the horrible atrocities
committed by the German killing machine and that the whole situation is
not-plausible and that Mrs Quoad and Darlene may not even exist at all...
all that stuff... but i understand the Frenchman pun to be a PUN because of
the known phrase it mimics...

is there supposed to be a phrase that TDECD mimics?  or is it simple to be
viewed as a joke, a light hearted and comic metaphor showing the horrid
treatment of what the reader is aware but not the characters themselves
