          Tore Rye Andersen:
This refusal to name the wilderness Creature is not
so much motivated by "ritual reluctance" (Lot 49, 71),
as by sheer blind terror at what the name would evoke.
Unlike Tristero, that Creature, as the unnamed glacier,
come from an ancient time *before* language, and the
characters are afraid of summoning their terrible wrath
upon themselves, should they dare to name them.

"There are some words "they" don't allow to be spoken":

It has long been my belief that Enochia extends into
high and powerful realms and it is a totally different
system from the more commonly known magical
systems of occult philosophy used. I cannot stress
sufficiently that the system should be treated with
respect, and always to exercise the need to avoid
the danger of misunderstanding or misusing words.
Words, whether mundane or esoteric should be handled
with great care and not regarded as a plaything. I am
sure most seekers do not do this and I think through
these responsible people the light is passed on and
the desired continuity is accomplished with the finding
of new workers in the vineyard.

          Tore Rye Andersen:
The ironic thing is, of course, that if they actually went
ahead and named that wilderness Creature/glacier/
odalisque of the snows, they would have taken the first
step towards taming them, detracting from their
sublimity (Edmund Burke's notion of the Sublime,
which speaks of the awe and horror caused by dark
and uncertain forces beyond language, seems
          particularly apt here).

Me, I'm not so sure. I know that magical systems are supposed to
invoke all sorts of spirits, some potentially world-wrecking Deities,
and "Ritual Reluctance" has everything to do with that. "Be careful
what you invoke, it's supposed to turn up." And high ceremonial
magick (loads of examples in AtD) is supposed to invoke these
sorts of powers. The powers might be part of some divine interlocking,
universally encompassing overall plan, but invoking some of these
powers can wreck havock on the conjuror, not to mention the planet
at large..

Little is known of Barrett's early life, but he appears
to have been born in London between 1770 and
1780. He made several ill-fated attempts at balloon
ascents in the Summer and Fall of 1802, but is best
known as the author, or more accurately, the compiler,
          of the Magus.

WE now proceed to speak of the holy and sacred
Pentacles and Seals. For these pentacles are certain
holy signs and characters, preserving us from evil
chances and events, helping and assisting us to bind,
exterminate, and drive away evil spirits, alluring the
good spirits, and reconciling them to us.

It was lawful apparently for the Magus to conjure and
compel the devils, to rack the hierarchy of Infernus by
the agony of Divine Names, but he must leave the
          dead to their rest

the existing samples of Angelic -- specifically, work
