Yes, I reckon the ending holds out the *possibility* of hope, that maybe all 
is not lost just yet. It's as if Pynchon-as-God is saying 'I sent you the 
CHums to guide you, and you screwed up. Ah well, maybe next time...' but of 
course we all know that 'next time' will be even worse.
