Can't recall if this has been covered already, but the whole idea of
grace in AtD - isn't the Christian version of grace kind of a
get-out-of-jail-free card for the preterite? Ie salvation despite your
sins? From my reading around the net, that seems to be one
interpretation. God's grace allows even life's losers to find
transcendence.
Which seems to gel with the overall compassion I read in P's work. So
you messed up? Lived a bad life? There might still be a space for you
onboard.

Yes, I reckon the ending holds out the *possibility* of hope, that maybe
all is not lost just yet. It's as if Pynchon-as-God is saying 'I sent
you the CHums to guide you, and you screwed up. Ah well, maybe next
time...' but of course we all know that 'next time' will be even worse.
