In the wikipedia quote that Keith posted, there's the comment, "The ritual 
precinct may only be
entered by a special class of pallbearers.". Probably obvious, but this 
seems a pretty apt description of Reef as he ascends the tower and bears his 
father's corpse (though a pallbearer in reverse, as Keith has noted, and 
reversed again, by his ascension, rather than descension, to retrieve the 
body) off the tower and  away from Jeshimon, apparently unmolested by the 
"gather[ing] audience".  Perhaps coincidence, but one meaning of pall is 
"mantle or cloak"....cf the "cloque" Reef uses to climb the tower. Regarding 
the Tibetan sky burial, note that "[Reef] shot a carrion bird, maybe two" 
before absconding with their meal....
