In case you haven't read them, I would recommend the firsthand nonfiction 
experience 'The Gulag Archipelago' and the literary accounts (based on real 
experience as well) Varlam Shalamov's 'Kolyma Tales'. With all respect to 
Amis, these writers have been there. And  Solzhenitsyn is still alive, btw.
