I don't know whether it was officially "exposed" as false, but even a casual 
comparison between that picture and the few known photos of our man makes it 
pretty obvious that it is, indeed, false (or, more likely, just some private 
little joke which somehow made it to the Internet). The nose is all wrong, 
as are the teeth - protruding or not. But the clincher: That guy is wearing 
a NAMETAG, for crying out loud!
At one point, this obvious fake was one of the first hits when you did an 
image search for "Thomas Pynchon" on Google. That, and general ignorance, 
probably explains why the Spanish editors chose to illustrate their article 
with this particular picture.
