Not the regular Everyman's Library editions, true, but they did put out a 
series of more contemporary works where the authors' photos are indeed on 
the cover. See e.g.

The cover of the never-materialized GR seems to be consistent with these 
editions (but still you're right: it may have been a dummy cover, and it 
remains very surprising that Pynchon should have allowed his face to be 
plastered across the cover of the book in this way).
