Kronos, the Titan god of time, was famous for swallowing each of his
newborn sons so they could not overthrow him. Zeus was saved a trip
down the gullet of Time when his mother Rhea concealed a stone in an
infant's diaper which lodged in his gullet. Thus, you have the idea
of Time devouring mortals.

In this passage, the narrator is comparing the significance of
murdered miners to jug whiskey. Jug whiskey is cheap and easily
drank. The miners lives are insignificant, and they are easily
devoured by time (down the gullet of days), whether they are murdered
or not. Miners had a very low life expectancy due to the many hazards
of mining.
