I'm not much more knowledgeable about karma myself, but I've always
hoped that it doesn't mean a person should be trying to balance the
scales themselves - ie taking revenge, in Lake's case - but is more
about the universe evening things out. So if Lake had killed Deuce, she
would have been committing a wrong act which would be revisited upon her
later.
I don't think Lake's act is at all injust in a karmic sense. In fact,
she's kind of showing kindness to someone who wronged her terribly, even
if her heart isn't exactly in it, or she's doing it for the wrong
reasons.
Raises a huge number of questions about the relationship between karma
and revenge, though - both big themes P is playing with throughout the
novel.

Admittedly, I'm bandying around the term "karma" like the ignorant
western-hemispherean I am, but it seems as if Lake marrying Deuce
instead of killing him creates a massive karma imbalance. Question for
those who know all that the term implies: must karma be balanced at all
times? Wasn't the injustice of Lake's action, karma-wise, similar to
the massive injustice looming in Europe?

>>Two partial answers to your questions.....I do not know why, human
motivationally, Lake marries Deuce. (a seaman deuce--V.--by the way is
a seaman apprentice, so a Deuce Kindred is....pretty clear). I do
think, however, it is Pynchon's way of saying: Webb and his killers are
kindred.....Webb, too, was a killer, as we know.
