Bryan Snyder:
The Lake-Gottfried comparison is very
interesting... but there's definitely a
difference in regard to TRP's intention
with the both. I think there's nothing
going on in any of his novels, at least
past GR, that is unintentional, so I think
Lake's thinness as a character is
mysteriously purposeful.
And there's something about her Lakeness as well. You really need
to go on to pages 1040-1059 to look for all the pregnancy/stillbirth
echos of Ms. Maas and Lew's Illumination of the Hollywood scene,
transposing what Mr. Basnight had learned from the Cohen onto
his practice as a detective. I can't claim to understand the dream
we get to share with Lake, but it's definitely worth the detour. This
does constitute a spoiler, so if you haven't been there already,
save it for later.
I suspect the only thing unintentional in The Crying of Lot 49 is
Oed's parking in Berkeley and San Francisco.
