I just reread this section in order to post and it is only now with Laura's obs that I got that, but
it sure seems right....
YES?...try this on top of Laura's obs........the sculpture is invisible......and because things can move in time in this section.....
that wind bringing the odor from upwind having the "same index of refraction"--- is a wind from the future???
What otherwise is an index of refraction that it can apply to wind and an invisible 'modernist' building???

Followed by a general rant about Jews, and Jew-baiting of various non-Jewish Gottingen mathematicians (the Jewish ones were, of course, purged by the Nazis. David Hilbert [disclaimer: Wikipedia source] seems to have lodged only mild protests).
On p. 625 [re: modern rational architecture becoming invisible]:
"'Until one day one is left with only traces in the world, a few tangles of barbed wire defining the plan-view
of something no longer quite able to be seen ... perhaps certain odors as well, seeping in, late at night, from somewhere upwind, a wind which itself posesses now the same index of refraction as the departed Structure...'"
The speaker is identified as "someone in a guard's uniform." It seems to be an anticipation of the Holocaust.
