GE__RAT__ - Weisenburger plays a different hangman?

Hi all,

The graffiti that Slothrop encounters in the unfinished game of hangman is
GE__RAT__ which Weisenburger suggests as GENERATOR at V734.2

This doesn't hold for me as, in all versions of Hangman I have ever played,
when someone suggests a letter, all instances of it are written in. The
player has in this case suggested G,E,R,A and T which would yield the
following pattern for GENERATOR: GE_ERAT_R, not GE__RAT__. I have done a
dictionary search on English and German words that fit this pattern but have
no repeats (and therefore work within the rules) but have had no luck.

Is there a variant that allows the "hanger" to only fill in 1 letter at a
time?
