Atdtda[20] 549.22: 'between Nieuport and Dunkirk

There was indeed before WW1 a long range of dunes between Newport, about 
20 km southeast of Ostend, and Dunkirk in France'.  Pynchon's spelling 
is rather doubtful in this case: it is Nieuwpoort in Dutch, Nouvelle 
Porte in French and Newport in English.

Nieuwpoort, located at the end (limit?) of the WW1 front, has a rather 
ugly massive monument on Belgian King Albert 1.  Seeing that monument 
meant, a few decades ago, that holiday started.  Here is a picture of
