             The Adam Hochschild book is really good -- currently rereading it 
             for the sake of a hosting section.  He wrote also Bury the Chains: 
             Prophets and Rebels in the Fight to Free an Empire's Slaves 
             which is also convincing (the first human rights action in Europe 
             for abolishing slavery)

Thanks, slavery is one of those subjects omnipresent in Pynchon, though 
usually carefully limited in exposure or somewhat hidden in his books. By
