Time and a time machine...p. 453 "Build a time machine".......once again, overcoming Time.....the promise of (most) religions..........
"We thus enter the whirlwind"....
Cf...JOB 38:1-40:24
Whirlwhind: God, who speaks to Job from a whirlwind. "God appears speaking in a voice from a whirlwind, from a tornado and it's, I gave you some little flavor of it before, it's an amazing diatribe God embarks on. Job has stirred up a hornet's nest. God is in a sarcastic mood and keeps asking him "Well, where were you when I laid this whole thing out? Do you know how to stop the waves from breaking? Do you know where they should go? Do you know where I keep the hail and the snow? Do you hunt game for the lioness?" Bill McKibben
Notice it is the same tornado..the same whirlwind always returning!......OBA is so 'f'in CLEVER, pushing an idea to its furthest joke......
p. 452 Eternal Return. The concept, made most famous by Nietzsche, refers to the endless
repeatedness of events in a cyclical eternal universe. But we know from CofL49 (i think) that
Pynchon has read Mircea Eliade, another thinker into the conjunction of magic, science and religion who had a different conception: The religious scholar Mircea Eliade has applied the term "eternal return" to what he sees as a universal religious belief in the ability to return to the mythical age through myth and ritual (see Eternal Return (Eliade)). Eliade's theory of "eternal return" describes a distinctly nonspontaneous process that depends on human behavior; thus, it should be distinguished from the philosophical theory of eternal return (the subject of this article), which describes a mathematically inevitable process.
See wikipedia on Eternal Return for both.
Notice Roswell Bounce....[Roswell, famous UFO allusion and bounce----Bounce, more joke to me] .....Candlebrow back again.......
Comment on: "Make gravity impervious to time? Gravity, that fact and metaphor TRP has made famous.......
Gravity and time CANNOT/ SHOULD NOT be overcome in TRP's positive vision of Life? Yes?
the chapter ends with a famous mathematician 'with an astronomical distance set equal to an imaginary unit of time". P. 458
Jake with me. He also said 'mystic'.
"Notice the way the speed of light kept coming into it?"........"translate this into hardware"
Thematic still.........and
Q: is this where a time machine was really first made????.....
