836 "There was no light from anywhere."
They are there, in the underworld. Hell.

[Cf. "No light but darkness visible"--"Paradise Lost", John Milton.

  A-and 836 "the storm": ---Cf.
" a crash, Of heavy thunder",....
I found me of the lamentable vale,
The dread abyss, that joins a thunderous sound
Of plaints innumerable."
----Divine Comedy, Cantos iv.]

p.837 poor Cyprian...."another part of the mechanical realm"
Cf. " "V." and Benny's fear of the inanimate.....Cf. Pynchon's
oeuvre. Cyprian is now all feeling of the physical, the material world.
Which is hellish in P's vision?
