837, a great line, "mass and velocity and cold gravity, here before him,
after him, despite him".....what a rhythmic riff on lifelessness, yes?
  
Three, actually four, of Pynchon's major BAD THINGS as tropes, metaphors........Other examples?   Cf. "secular gravity", p. 717.....Vibe adding mass...
Gravity gets heavy--groan, sorry--with more meaning and foreallusion, so to speak.
   
  The soulless---'formerly ensouled self"----weight of the purely physical.....................
