If one were to create a dialectic simply by banging two writers' heads
together, its success would hinge on those writers being dissimilar
enough to create a fruitfully unlikely synthesis. I think that in
Thomas Pynchon and Primo Levi, we have two such writers. No one, to my
knowledge, has compared them before, and for good reason: they are
complete opposites....
