The theme that keeps on giving—bad blood. This
scene gets replayed all over Vineland, that struggle
between the need to do good coupled with an
urge to blow stuff up, to act out in revenge. And
yet, and yet. . . .
"You might 's well have stayed in Colorado," Dally
said. Either way you're carryin on that family tradition."
"Beg pardon?" Curious about how far she'd take it.
"Bombs," she said. "Bombs in the family. At least
Reef and your Pa put' em where they'd do some good."
"Austrians," Kit thought he would explain.
"Your brothers-in-arms. They're not the ones need bombing,
hell even I know that."
"Then save me."
"What?"
"If I'm such miserable case, help me get back to the right piece
of trail at least. You tell me."
Kit and Dally's loveboat is torpedoed once more, Dally goes to Paris,
Kit hears of the sinking of the S.S. Persia:
. . . . among those lost had been Dally's colleague Eleanor Thornton,
who had modeled for the Rolls-Royce hood ornament known as the
Spirit of Ecstasy. . . .
Kit finally gets a postcard from Dally in Paris and goes back to sleeping
at night.
But by the time we catch up with him on page 1077 we are informed that
"We're in Hell, you know,"
That "right piece of trail" issue comes up again later, Kit searching for
the right trail in what appears to be a sub-species of yo-yo-ing, with
an order of Quarterninions on the side.
