It might be Idiotic for Reef just to be an outlaw and go to the 
U.S right about now.— this is the time of the Palmer raids.

Reef heads west, searching for someplace "the 
capitalist/Christer gridwork hadn't got to quite yet"
when before you know it he catches up with son Jesse,
managing to say just the wrong thing right out of the gate:

          Jesse didn't look all that surprised but was sure annoyed. 
          "How do you think it feels, comin in bein hit with that?" 

There's considerable fence-mending to attend to. 

          Reef would one day be able to pass along pieces of 
          paternal wisdom like how to stack a deck or 
          recognize a company detective

Fortunately, there's hours and hours to be spent just fishing:

          indifferent anglers into accomplished masters, so helping 
          Reef and Jesse learn their way into companionable silence, 
          which both would come to admit was more than either had 
          hoped for.
