Sorry about that [I know that a lot of what I do is probably
O.T.T.], but the reference to Tuvan throat singing on pages
1079 and 1080 comes after many pages in Against the Day [and
Vineland, for that matter] concerning Buddhism and Buddhist
spiritual practice. Pynchon writes more, and in greater detail,
regarding Buddhism in Against the Day than in any other of his
books. I suspect that Buddhism must mean more to Pynchon now,
after all, Gravity's Rainbow was published 37 years ago, a lot can
happen in 37 years.
If OBA wanted to point to 1000 monkeys, I'm sure he would
have mentioned them. Can't imagine anything that would stop him.
I find themes of compassion as they relate to Buddhism to make
up one of the major threads of Against the Day.
I guess details like this stand out more if you develop the habit of
lighting up a prayer wheel several times a week.
While I guess that it seems like Pynchon seems to throw in
the kitchen sink in his novels, he does spend more time on
certain subjects than others.
