Oddly enough, I just finished reading "The Confusions of Young
Torless" by Robert Musil (1903), a bildungsroman in which one way
the protagonist tries to gain information about or access to his
"soul" or aesthetic/moral essence is via a parallel to imaginary
numbers. Interesting - and a very good book.
