Oddly enough,  I just finished reading "The Confusions of Young  
Torless" by Robert Musil (1903), a bildungsroman  in which one way  
the protagonist tries to gain information about or access to  his  
"soul" or aesthetic/moral essence is via a parallel to imaginary  
numbers.   Interesting -  and a very good book.
