p29 - if you ever sat, riveted, through "My Dinner With Andre", you
probably remember the Wally Shawn character's voice-over at the end
saying
"And then I went home and told Debbi all about my dinner with Andre."

It really is kind of fun to compare the 2 meals.
The Wally Shawn character sits there while the other dude goes on & on
about all his counterculture adventures.
With his steadiness, his normalcy, and his nice wife Debbi waiting for
him at home, he's a silent refutation to all this hippie nonsense.
Compelling. Fascinating.

Whereas here at Vineland Lanes, it's Hector (whose wife is also named
Debbi) who's raving and Zoyd (though not as quiet as the Wally Shawn
guy in MDWA) is the one who perforce keeps it together. Hector pulls
out all the stops - dangles Frenesi, the prospect of money, tugs at
Zoyd's conscience, scoffs at Zoyd's ideals, taunts him with poverty,
makes much of the Reagan Revolution, tries for Zoyd's pity and even
reminds him of death:
"Hey, all right fuckhead, try this - *you are goin' to have to die?
Yeah-heh-heh, remember that? Death! after all them yearss of
nonconformist shit...drivin around some piece of garbage ain't even in
the blue book no more..."

which leads me to wonder, what manner of vehicle is Zoyd's ride?
We know he borrowed Trent's Li'l Hustler Datsun pickup after loaning
his "rig" to neighbor-lady Elvissa (p35)
also, on p.45 - if Rick and Chick are indicating the Skoda carburetor
on the front seat to Zoyd as they also point him to the phone, then
he's after parts for an old Czech pickup truck, right?

but anyway, back on page 32,
"Check's in the mayo" indicating that at least he hasn't lost his
sense of humor.
