In NYC, we have a superior economic index: the Pizza-token index. Since at least the '60s (when I first noticed), a slice of pizza cost the same as a subway token. For the past year or so, the index has been totally out of whack. Subway ride: $2.00, pizza slice: a minimum of $2.50, on average. Clear sign that the economy is running amok.
