thx for this Otto

still boning up on my German--the practice is good, nicht wahr?

anyway, I finished 2666 a few weeks ago--the best parts of the book
are the awful scenes in Saint Theresa--I was not much impressed by the
other sections--the same annoying intellectuals found in much of
Bolanos' work, and the background of Baron von Archimboldi was a bit
anti-climatic

i think it is worth reading in these days of minimalist fiction but I
guess what is missing for me is the shear joy of reading--the prose is
pretty leaden overall, though Bolano's energy and imagery are pretty
notable, too. I guess what I'm saying is I don't think I'd want to
read it again.

considering the continued violence in Mexico does make the book timely
that's for sure (check out the continuing series of pieces in the LA
Times--very sobering reading)
