carabinieri
The Carabinieri, (Italian for Carabiniers) are the national level gendarmerie force of Italy who
also perform military police duties. They police both the military and civilian populations.
Their Italian name is used as the common name for this force in English. The full official title
of the force is Arma dei Carabinieri (Force of Carabinieri); it was formerly called the Corpo dei
Carabinieri.
Historically, a Carabiniere was a cavalryman or soldier armed with a carbine. Their motto is Nei
Secoli Fedele ("Faithful throughout the Centuries" but usually translated as "Always Faithful").
Their mission was to control crime and to serve the community through respect for the Law.

Jake
A term often used in the New England states to refer to a good firefighter. One story has the
term originating from the corruption of the phrase, "J-key." Years ago, the bed was the most
expensive piece of furniture in a dwelling. Since firefighters weren't as good at stopping fire
as they are today, they would attempt to remove as many belongings as possible. The bed was too
large to carry out in one piece and had to be disassembled using a bed key. The key was shaped
like the letter J and called a J-key.

Iron Bridge
Ponte degli Scalzi
If arriving in Venice by train this bridge over the Grand Canal is probably the first one you
see. Its 40m long and its 7m height provides an amazing view of the places down the Grand Canal.
The first thing I have to do on arrival in Venice is stand here and drink in the view. It was
named after the nearby monastery of the bare-footed monks and was built in 1934, being made of
Istrrain stone to replace a former ironbridge.

For centuries the only bridge over the Canal Grande was the Ponte di Rialto, then in 1854
Austria, the occupying power since 1815 when Venice became part of the Habsburg Kingdom of
Lombardy-Veneto, decided to erect a second footbridge and the Ponte dell'Accademia, a small iron
bridge, was built. In 1932 the iron bridge was demolished and replaced by a wooden bridge. Looked
upon as a temporary measure, it was to be replaced by a stone bridge, but this was never built.
