The section opens with Lew's take on the Cohen: "It seemed ..." etc. This
contrasts with his entry to the previous section (678-679); although it
follows on from the ending of his scene with Werfner, up the page on 683.
Hence: "It did not descend all at once upon Lew's understanding what this
meant ..." etc (684). Ostensibly about Werfner/Renfrew, the narrative
concerns Lew and his role, "nothing more than their hired gunslinger". Cf.
"... Eugenie gazing meaningfully at Kit" on 529.
Lew has entered a phase of enlightenment, one that allows him to see through
the Ns' act: "... they were impersonating British idiots" (685). Cue
paranoia: "What else could they be using him for ..." etc. Consequently, his
investigation shifts from the two men who resemble each other to further
knowledge as to how they can be one and the same. The ensuing description of
bilocation is filtered through Lew's reading: "... from what Lew could
gather". Down the page: "... it presently seemed to Dr Ghloix". Finally, the
Cohen, with a reminder of his changing status, reappears with "some
vegetarian analogue of the Melton Mowbray Pork Pie" (687): one resembling
that from which it differs. Ghloix has said "one learns what one has to only
when it is time to"; by the bottom of the page "Lew could not help thinking
he had somehow, without knowing how, become ready to hear" what the Cohen
tells him. The Cohen's passionate discourse on light then finds him at the
door, making a rapid exit, denying Lew the opportunity to say anything in
reply (688).
