The "farewell visit to the little-known but rewarding Museum der
Monstrositaten" takes us back to "the third floor of the Auditorienhaus",
and therefore back to Kit's meeting with Yashmeen at the start of the
chapter (616). The Museum is "a sort of nocturnal equivalent of Professor
Klein's huge collection of mathematical models" (632); as such this 'going
back' offers an alternative, which is where we came in with Kit's two banks
(615). On the earlier occasion in the Audiorienhaus, Kit interrupted
Yashmeen's studies, seeking to impose order on the "chaos of open books"
(616) by noting the absence of "the 1859 paper on primes". Unsurprised, she
had been waiting for him, possibly ("not at all distracted"). Here, Kit will
be sent on his way: ". they obviously needed some time together" (634).
So Kit is an intruder of sorts, in the way; or perhaps it is Gunther,
returning to break up the Kit Yashmeen relationship that has been confirmed,
with Kit's new job, in recent pages. Or perhaps it is Yashmeen herself,
"wander[ing] off as Gunther, his eyes gleaming in the shadow of his hatbrim,
approached Kit ..." etc (635). Yashmeen has appeared suddenly, materialising
as she once disappeared in Kit's room (592), only to announce Gunther, who
will speak of duty and family, topics that Kit, currently, is sensitive to:
"Practically my neck of the woods ..." etc (635).
