713 2 "What do you think, Mr. Latewood?"
So again a mingling of levels in the narrative: what looks like
an omniscient commentary turns out to be a lead-in
from Sloth- er, Cyprian's interrogator.

Hotel Klomser - big spy dude named Redl in "reality"
had some major haps connected with the Hotel Klomser...
details on Wikipedia, they are more than just pretty fascinatin'

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alfred_Redl

Miskolci - well, ya know, vampirism is certainly a good
metaphor for all kinds of vicious behavior: drug dealing,
some say capitalism -- but having a real vampire on your
staff would make interrogations easier at times...

713 26 "this red haze of connective threadwork"
for some reason this phrase is particularly evocative and gruesome
for me...how about you?

713 28 "first Moroccan crisis" - 1905,
if in ATD-world Theign's leaving Vienna coincided with the
end of the Redl affair, 1913 - that would mean
Theign was in Vienna at least 8 years. It would also
put us in 1913, so no wonder we're talking glimpses
of hateful future. And the Austrian cavalry guys on
the train would soon be dead (a-and their horses too!)

but that's not what I meant to say. The first
Moroccan crisis was caused by Kaiser Wilhelm
giving a speech...
indeed kinda like sodomitical rivalries: "well he said this...and
so I had to..."
