P. 708 "'So close in fact as to begin to lose oneself...."
"Just what you people fancy isn't it, surrender of the ego sort of thing".
Theign to Cyprian...........
___________________________________________________----
Of course, at one level, Theign kinda making fun of "love"...love as ego loss.......
One's ego lost in love with another.......aligned with Cyprian's kind of spirituality?
But at another level, of course, the loss of self when one has to work for The Organization....
A-and, I reread this---after Robin's remarks on healthy narcissim...(therefore the existence of
unhealthy narcississm)....
>From The Culture of Narcissim, by Christopher Lasch, 1979:
"Far from reflecting the "alarming growth of ego', narcissism signals a loss of ego, an invasion
of the ego by social forces that have made it more and more difficult for people to grow up"...
It was, ..."a disorder in which the self loses its boundaries amd merges with its surroundings"....
"the narcissist depends on others to validate his self-esteem".............
Perhaps when Pynchon's full vision of healthy individuals---almost impossible to exist in his vision
of modernity----is fleshed out [pun just noticed and accepted]....he, too, often would see human character
this way...........
Perhaps Mason & Dixon is/are his vision of full characters, therefore healthy charater types, more or less?
