read almost to the end of _Invisible Man_ (Ralph Ellison)
that is one really good book! There is one poignant list (the eviction)
the images and associations of
which play on the inner eye and emotions as much as any in GR or AtD
warming up with some non-scientific reactions
667 - "wa'n't 'at long ago you were playin pretty much the same hand."
--- are we privy to this? Do we have Ruperta's back story?
I couldn't find it.
668 - Kit's frustration, or inability to communicate with
Yashmeen - so recently involved with that Japanese chick
and being left by her with nothing he could say about it
now, when Yashmeen may actually be willing to alter her plans
and waiting for him to say something...he can't be serious...
sort of a double-doubling-down imho:
Yashmeen/Umeki math womyn coming @ Kit...
but also and more twistedly: Kit as a double of _Cyprian_
in being unable to find Yashmeen effable
also on 668 - "Ite, Missa est." Latin for "Go, Mass is over",
overtone of "Missed" as in Kit missed out and/or she will miss him...
& on 668 - "the first derivative of a kiss of unknown duration" math
but thinking about ok, the kiss itself would be in 4-space and therefore
the 1st derivative would be a cubic (3-space) equation
-- backing up a little from that --- "her mouth carefully rouged in a
shadowy cerise [love that word] into the first derivative..."
so she, in 4-space (spacetime that is, not one with a
"nontime" 4th dimension -- that would be more Umeki's province...)
tracing a curve toward the moment of the kiss...
669 - "...alert. His hands ached..." That used to happen
to me getting off on hallucinogens, and other nerve-wracking times.
The certain type of ache, not solely painful, that helps focus the mind?
669 - Kit and Reef, talking that Western talk in Switzerland.
In fact, Kit brought that internal language with him to Yale,
quoting what is referred to later as the family motto, "Tengo que
get el fuck out of here" (This is so evocative of periods in my
own life when my mantra was "Gotta get aus von hier"...to share
another personal reaction) -- anyway, my 1st derivative, thinking of this
scene and branching out to others, is that the Traverse boys are assertive
and not at all deferential to the other cultures they encounter
--
"Smith Jones asked me if the halibut could fit inside the mailbox. I
said I didn't think so" - Elizabeth Kolbert
