YES, I say unreflectively..........This firms up a growing half-felt observation of mine, not fully worked out---but what is this
list for, anyway?---that certain places "transorm" certain Pynchon characters' selves........

>From "the infamous children's prison" to cathedrals to mountains to explain
Philippe's "early appreciation of institutional places". He is "especially
partial to cathedrals". Perhaps a key is provided by "... the Tatzelwurms
know it all intimately", the strong sense of identification that comes from,
eg, Goffman's concept of institutionalisation, the transformation of self.
In the cathedral one might 'disappear' into a wall, just as the Tatzelwurm
will disappear from the tunnel (and cf. Yashmeen's disappearance from Kit's
room on 592). Reef's departure will then take place on a day "just like any
other day" (with of course this one important difference). Perhaps
Philippe's off-hand comment has effectively distanced him from the crew:
"Did we forget to mention that?" (659).
