Not just an offhand joke. 

If one of the deeper themes of GR is Why is there the self-hatred of humanity that leads to the self-destruction of War?; why is there War against our "brothers"?; Is there a Death Wish in History, in our collective psyches?..............

Then, maybe that's part of the meaning of Enzian and Tchitcherine?
