Hello
I believe Pynchon wanted me to stumble on some history. I'm studying
Crouchmas and the Turkish railway guarantees because of their scripophilic
importance. I have decided to put the same articles in front of you that I
have read. The main long one under the chester link has a bit about a Sir
Ernest Cassel, a financier with German sympathies. I think Crouchmas has
those leanings too. There's some info in there on the link between railways
and mining, which I had never considered, and after you poke around on the
internet about what would spin out over the course of the time in ATD, it
seems as though it's an intentional reference to the present time and how
Americans (and British?) seem to like --and not learn from mistakes of--
meddling and exacerbating conflicts in the middle east for business and
financial gain. Here is a link to my utilitarian and spartan website. The
articles are from 1910, 1906, an abstract from JSTOR, & a Biography of
Colby Mitchell Chester.
